Kelowna is a vibrant lakeside city in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, known for its dramatic landscapes, thriving arts and culture scene, award-winning wineries, and strong sense of community. Framed by mountains, orchards, and water, it is a place shaped by innovation, natural beauty, and a rich cultural heritage.
KDA developed a conceptual Signature Sign for Kelowna that reimagines the city’s name as a sculptural landmark rooted in place, culture, and digital expression. Each large-scale letter introduces a unique narrative inspired by local stories, landscapes, and community values. Fully programmable lighting and integrated digital elements allow the concept to shift with seasons, events, and civic moments. KDA’s work focused on narrative development, thematic curation, visual storytelling, and the creation of a cohesive experiential framework.
Digital Storytelling, Programmable Lighting
Each of the six letters flanking the central “O” in the proposed Signature Sign features fully addressable RGB LED lighting. The “O” itself is a fully programmable LED video display, capable of showcasing Indigenous art, civic celebrations, community stories, and other digital imagery.
The lighting across the six letters and the central “O” can be synchronized to create coordinated visual narratives that shift with the seasons. This programmability transforms the Signature Sign into a responsive, living landmark—one that visually resonates with Kelowna’s cultural rhythms and community identity.
Distinct Concept, Rooted in Story
Honouring syilx/Okanagan Culture
The concept respectfully acknowledges the syilx/Okanagan Nation by integrating themes connected to land, water, and ecological responsibility. KDA’s approach emphasizes cultural sensitivity through symbolism, environmental storytelling, and space for future collaboration, ensuring the conceptual design reflects values of respect, connection, and shared stewardship.
Lettered Stories
KDA created a narrative system in which each letter expresses a distinct aspect of Kelowna, from agriculture and lake life to innovation, stewardship, and neighbourhood character. These themes were woven into the visual and spatial design, shaping a unified and expressive identity that celebrates the diversity and spirit of the region.
Supporting Public Life Along the Waterfront
Set along a crescent-shaped pathway at the lake’s edge, the Signature Sign is designed to become a natural extension of experiences along the waterfront, a welcoming, visually engaging feature that enhances the vibrancy of the area and the spirit of Kelowna. Its distinct form, accessible location, and sense of story have been designed to create memorable photo moments and connect visitors with the city.
