Established in 1959, York University stands as one of Toronto’s prominent institutions of higher education offering a wide range of academic programs, research initiatives, and interdisciplinary learning. The University’s campus hosts a vibrant community of students, faculty, and staff from around the world.
KDA stewarded the development of an all-encompassing wayfinding master plan for both the interior and exterior spaces of York University’s expansive 550-acre campus. Through an integrated presentation of the York U logo and a thoughtfully designed wayfinding system, the master plan not only provides effective navigation it also cultivates a sense of belonging and identity within the campus community. This comprehensive wayfinding initiative reflects KDA’s commitment to seamless user experiences and its expertise in translating brand identity into tangible visual elements.
Acknowledging the ever-changing and dynamic nature of York’s campus, KDA adopted a forward-looking strategy to ensure that the plan remains pertinent in both current and future contexts. By considering the current layout and anticipating future expansions and changes, KDA developed a program that meets the navigational needs of students, faculty, and visitors while aligning with the evolving campus environment.

KDA’s design, both timeless and bold, effortlessly blends with the varied architectural styles that characterize the campus. This careful integration creates a unified visual narrative that resonates with the University’s dynamic spirit and architectural diversity.
SEAMLESS CAMPUS JOURNEYS
With the intent to ensure seamless journeys, KDA designed a practical, user-centric wayfinding map system that guides students with detailed location information while presenting a clear overview of the overall campus. The use of recognizable navigational aids, along with user-friendly orientation markers and icons, enhances the usability of the map and provides an intuitive wayfinding experience.
SIGNAGE MANUAL FOR FUTURE NEEDS
KDA developed a comprehensive standards and guidelines manual for the entirety of York University’s interior and exterior signage system. These guidelines play a pivotal role in assisting University staff in successfully expanding the program by providing a clear roadmap that outlines the correct placement, visual elements, and consistent branding across the entire campus. The guidelines serve as a valuable resource, aiding in maintaining the integrity of the design while adapting to the evolving demands of the University’s dynamic environment.
