Sugar Wharf
Menkes developments, Toronto
Sugar Wharf is a large-scale, mixed-use development situated on an expansive 11.5-acre site along Lake Shore Boulevard East, adjacent to Lake Ontario and the vibrant downtown core. Offering a range of residential, commercial, and public spaces, developed in three distinct blocks, it combines both adaptive re-use of heritage assets, contemporary architecture, urban design, and a thoughtful mix of amenities to create an inclusive and livable environment.
As a means to creatively connect these diverse amenities, KDA designed a comprehensive signage master plan for the overall development that embraced Sugar Wharf’s connection to the water’s edge and the iconic role the Redpath Sugar Factory has played in the community. Secondary motifs throughout the program feature water, wave and anchor motifs and an aqua-marine palette. The program has been strategically developed to be adapted and implemented as each block is phased to create a continued, harmonious sense of place while providing essential wayfinding throughout.
Considered Approach. Creative Motif.
KDA created an umbrella brand for the overall property that visually distills the name ‘Sugar Wharf’ into a custom-designed anchor under which sub-brands for each of the three blocks are established and identified by their respective addresses.

Environmental graphic pattern
KDA designed a water and wave environmental graphic pattern that was intentionally used throughout the signage program to evoke a sense of calm, serenity and connectedness to Sugar Wharf’s waterfront location.
The name ‘Sugar Wharf’ pays homage to the site’s industrial past and reflects the area’s connection to Redpath Sugar refinery.
