For more than four decades, First Canadian Place (FCP) has proudly reigned as Canada’s tallest office tower, soaring 72 stories high and ranking 31st in North America. This iconic landmark, situated in Toronto’s Financial District, sets the gold standard not only in energy efficiency, operational excellence, and Class AAA quality but also as a thriving mixed-use complex. Within its impressive 2.8 million square feet, FCP serves as the global operational executive hub for the Bank of Montreal and offers a dynamic blend of retail and dining, and convenient three-level, below-grade parking.
Edward Durell Stone was the original design architect, a pioneer of the New Formalist Style. Thirty years post the original design, MdeAS Architects, along with B+H Architects, completed a significant design update to the entire tower cladding system and public spaces.
As consultants responsible for the wayfinding, signage, digital media, and street furniture at FCP, KDA’s multifaceted role included an integrated approach that seamlessly wove together various elements to create a harmonious and enhanced experience. KDA strategically considered the historical significance and architectural heritage of FCP, recognizing it as a symbol of excellence in design and functionality.
In this context, KDA embarked on a journey to carefully plan and execute a series of interior and exterior design solutions that not only paid the utmost respect to the building’s illustrious design legacy but also actively contributed to elevating the overall Triple A experience for tenants and visitors. This careful commitment to quality and design excellence is felt throughout the FCP environment.
Destination Dispatch
In response to the substantial annual influx of over 21 million visitors, KDA introduced a carefully designed alpha-numeric signage identification program within FCP’s destination dispatch system. The alpha-numeric signs are strategically positioned beside each of the 29 elevators, spread across different sections of the building. Whether passengers need access to specific floors, retail areas, dining establishments, or the underground parking facility, these signs play a crucial role in simplifying the process. They help passengers determine which elevator to choose for their intended destination, reducing wait times and enhancing the overall user experience of navigating the building.
Custom Designed Furniture & Fixtures
KDA’s design expertise extends to various furnishings and fixtures thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with FCP’s overarching attention to service and detail. These public amenities, including benches, litter receptacles, and light fixtures, not only contribute to a seamlessly coordinated visual aesthetic but also enhance the overall experience for the public, offering comfort, convenience, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Tenant Storefront Criteria Review
To maintain the highest standards in every aspect of public-facing storefront design, KDA remains dedicated to its role as signage consultant. Acting on behalf of Brookfield Properties, KDA assesses retail tenant submissions attentively, examining overall sign designs and specifications to ensure alignment with property guidelines, material and finish quality, and adherence to building standards.
A Premier Business Address
The exterior identification monument pylons showcase the building’s address, FCP brand and its roster of influential business tenants. Incorporating a palette of sophisticated materials and finishes used throughout the property, the pylons communicate and reflect the design excellence evidenced throughout the entire FCP environment.
Elevating the Parking Experience
KDA developed a thorough and well-planned parking wayfinding system that integrates advanced parking guidance technology, displaying real-time information to easily and effectively direct individuals to available parking stalls. A complementary back-of-house system was also designed and tailored for the convenience of both office and retail tenants.
